We all love parties but they can be a hidden risk for some

The party season is here. For people with asthma or lung conditions, festive celebrations can bring added challenges.

Whether it’s family lunches, Christmas, New Years parties or catching up with friends, some common activities could trigger your symptoms or cause a flare-up. Fireworks, scented candles and being around people who smoke or vape are just some of the potential risks.

Second hand smoke or vapour is a significant concern. Even brief exposure can irritate your lungs and worsen symptoms. Professor Yuben Moodley from the Institute for Respiratory Health encourages people to take precautions during the festive season. “If you’re attending gatherings, it’s important to avoid exposure to smoke and vaping. Don’t hesitate to ask friends or family not to smoke around you,” he said.

Festive stress can also make it harder to manage your condition. If you’re socialising or going out more than usual, this can be tiring.

“Try to take days at your own pace and make sure you’re getting plenty of rest. You might find it useful to tell people you’re visiting about your triggers and ways they can help you manage your lung condition,” Professor Moodley said.

Hot weather is a top trigger for many people with asthma at this time of year, it’s important to stay hydrated, check the pollen counts and make sure you always have your inhaler with you.

“Exposure to pollutants like scented candles and smoke from fireworks can lead to flare-ups,” Professor Moodley said. “By taking a few simple precautions, you can enjoy the festive season and prevent unnecessary health issues.”
