Quitting smoking: make 2025 the year you breathe easier

The New Year is the perfect time to embrace a fresh start and for many that means tackling big resolutions like quitting smoking. If you’ve thought about quitting before now is the time to take the leap and reap the benefits for your health and well-being.

Professor Yuben Moodley from the Institute for Respiratory Health said quitting smoking is one of the best decisions you can make.

“Quitting can bring immediate and long-term health benefits including better lung health and a longer healthier life,” Professor Moodley said.

“Smoking is a powerful addiction. Nicotine cravings, social triggers and stress can make quitting a real challenge. But with a solid plan, the right support and smoking treatments like nicotine replacement therapy you can succeed.”

Professor Moodley suggested setting realistic goals and seeking professional help to improve your chances of success.

“Instead of trying to quit cold turkey on New Year’s Day focus on making a plan. Talk to your doctor about available resources and treatments and don’t underestimate the power of support from friends, family and quit-smoking apps like My Quit Buddy,” he said.

“These tools can provide encouragement, tailored advice and practical tips to help you stay on track. A holistic approach is key addressing not just the addiction but the habits and emotions tied to smoking.”

The health benefits of quitting smoking start almost immediately:

  • After 20 minutes your pulse returns to normal
  • After eight hours oxygen levels in your blood begin to stabilise
  • After 24 hours carbon monoxide is eliminated and your lungs start clearing debris
  • After 72 hours breathing improves and energy levels rise
  • From three to nine months lung function increases by up to 10 per cent.

“Quitting smoking can be tough but it’s one of the most important steps you can take for your health,” Professor Moodley said.

Make 2025 the year you quit for good. With the right support, determination and resources a smoke-free future is within reach.
