Protecting your lungs in Perth’s summer heat
With Perth reaching 40 degrees today, respiratory health experts are reminding the community to take extra care of their lungs. Hot weather can affect everyone, but for those with long-term lung conditions like asthma, COPD, or bronchiectasis, the risks are higher.
Professor Yuben Moodley from the Institute for Respiratory Health says that high temperatures can pose challenges, especially for people with respiratory conditions.
“Hot weather can make it harder to breathe for some people, particularly those with pre-existing lung conditions,” Professor Moodley said. “Planning your day, staying out of the heat and staying hydrated can make a big difference.”
Our tips to protect yourself during this hot weather:
Check the forecasts
“Be aware of the weather and pollen levels,” Professor Moodley said. “High pollen counts, paired with the heat, can trigger breathing issues for some people.”
Stay indoors during peak heat
“Between 11:00am and 3:00pm, it’s best to stay indoors where it’s cooler,” Professor Moodley advised. “If you need to go out, stick to the early mornings or evenings, and choose shaded areas.”
Keep cool and hydrated
“Drink plenty of cold water even if you don’t feel thirsty,” he said. “Avoid alcohol and sugary or caffeinated drinks as they can dehydrate you. Using a fan or cooling yourself with water can also help.”
Dress for the heat
“Wear light, loose clothing and a wide-brimmed hat to stay cool,” Professor Moodley suggested. “If your medication makes you more sensitive to sunlight, don’t forget sunscreen and wraparound sunglasses.”
Be prepared
“It’s essential to have your medications on hand and store them correctly in this heat,” he said. “Make sure you’ve discussed a plan with your healthcare provider in case your symptoms flare up.”
Look Out for Others
Professor Moodley also encouraged people to check on those who might be vulnerable. “If you have neighbours, friends, or family members who live alone, make sure they’re managing well in this heat,” he said.
